Remember when you were a kid and you couldn’t sleep because you were so jazzed about something taking place the next day? Maybe it was a new pair of sneakers, a new Lunchables, or a holiday? You were so antsy, either sleep escaped you or you fell asleep in fits and bouts. Either way, you were up a majority of the time, thinking about everything and nothing at all.

You laid there and listened to the sound of your heart beating a pulse in your ears. The sheets rustled every time you kicked your feet around. The sound of passing cars in the distance punctuated the steady purr of crickets. Again, the pulse in your ears. Some deep breaths and a sigh. Your eyes blinked nothing in the darkness of your room. Your ceiling was a projection screen for roaming car headlights, and your eyes followed the squares and lines of moving light.

Sleep was the only barrier between you and tomorrow.
